This position will be dedicated to the reduction of workplace-related injuries within UC San Diego Health. The ideal applicant will apply professional knowledge and expertise for Sharps Safety and Needlestick Prevention as a specialty area within EH&S-Injury Prevention. This is a one-year contract position with the possibility of full-time employment depending on organizational needs.

This Sharps Safety Coordinator will serve as a lead person in the implementation, coordination, maintenance, and support of activities related to decreasing employee exposure to contaminated needles and sharps across services and disciplines throughout all UC San Diego Health locations. As part of the Injury and Illness Prevention team, core job duties will include:

* Point-of-contact for a pilot project for new safety needle products and supplies;

* Collaboration with all stakeholders to ensure a successful roll-out and implementation of a Sharps Safety program;

* Follow-up on all sharps-related employee exposure injury reports, and identify opportunities for injury prevention;

* Develop and administer training and education materials that will support Sharps Safety Program across all disciplines and UC San Diego Health locations;

* Assist patient care units in developing and implementing an effective Sharps Safety Program;

* Develop a workgroup that will capture metrics for analytic purposes and identify opportunities for improvement within the program

As part of the Injury Prevention team, will participate in support of other programs as needed.


  • Minimum Associate Degree or higher in a healthcare-related field

  • Minimum three (3) years of recent pertinent clinical expertise necessary to provide training on safe techniques of using different types of hypodermic and phlebotomy needles in clinical areas

  • Regulatory Knowledge of Needlestick Safety Prevention Act and Cal/OSHA Title 8 § 5193. Bloodborne Pathogens.

  • Knowledge of the different type of sharps-related products and safety engineering features

  • Competency in the safe use of sharps product following Infection Control Practices

  • Ability to manage, deliver, and implement a Sharps Safety Program to different clinical disciplines

  • Strong ability to effectively provide presentations to different audiences/groups

  • Ability to generate, collate, and report data related to program evaluation

  • Ability to conduct a hazard assessment, incident follow-up, and incident reporting with an appropriate plan of action

  • Strong oral and written communication skills


  • Current State License in Healthcare or Allied Health Field that includes using sharps product for medication administration and specimen collection, ie: LVN, RN, MA, CPT and/or CLS.


  • Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
