DESCRIPTION

The Student Health and Well-being (SHW) cluster of the UC San Diego Health System plays a leadership role in creating a strong and active wellness culture at UC San Diego that enables all students to flourish in body, mind and spirit. This includes promotion and the expansion/development of a student health and well-being center, and the transformation of existing departments under the oversight of the Executive Director into a cohesive, multi-disciplinary source of integrated wellness services. The SHW cluster includes the departments of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), Health Promotion Services (HPS), Student Health Services (SHS) and SHW Administration.

Health Promotion Services (HPS) is responsible for campus-wide education, outreach and prevention efforts on a variety of health topics. SHW uses a public health model in conceptualizing the delivery of programs and services. HPS provides services related to alcohol and other drugs (AOD), physical activity, nutrition, smoking cessation, sleep, stress, sexual health, emotional intelligence and mental health topics among others. HPS utilizes peer educators, peer coaching, marketing and a variety of campus wide campaigns to impact the students on a population basis. Other programs are targeted to groups of students at higher risk on selected well-being topics. Limited direct services are available such as clinical nutrition and AOD educational groups.

Reporting to the HPS Director, the per diem Dietitian represents Health Promotion Services (HPS) and the Student Health and Well-Being (SHW) Cluster, their mission and goals. Plans, administers and evaluates nutrition services for the UCSD students. Utilizes evidence and theory-based strategies and methods to influence policies, procedures, interventions and systems to improve health of individual students, as well as the overall student body. Represents HPS and makes recommendations on nutrition-related health education services for the campus community. Acts as an information resource on other issues related to college health and wellness. Assesses the nutrition status of individual patients via medical record review, patient interviews and diet histories. Participates in monthly meeting addressing high-risk disorder eating. Serves as a resource and expert in the field of nutrition for campus. Prepares and conducts presentations for undergraduates, graduates and professional students. Performs other Health Promotion duties as required or requested.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • The equivalent of a Bachelor’s degree in Foods and Nutrition/Dietetics and have completed an American Dietetic Association internship.

  • Must be a Registered Dietitian (RD).

  • Ability to assess nutritional histories.

  • Demonstrated experience in using electronic medical records and understanding of medical record management.

  • Experience in supervising and coordinating student counselors.

  • Demonstrated program planning and evaluation skills.

  • Demonstrated skills in public speaking.

  • Effective interpersonal, oral and written communication skills with an emphasis on professionalism. Ability to relate effectively and sensitively to diverse, multi-cultural populations.

  • Ability to develop, maintain and utilize a broad network of University departments and community agencies to complete tasks and accomplish goals. Knowledge of community resources in Public Health and College Health Initiatives.

  • Ability to plan and manage materials, space and human resources to maximize organizational efficiency and effectiveness.

  • Ability to use personal computer including word processing, desktop publishing and database application systems and knowledge of business/medical software applications and network systems.

  • At all times, demonstrate the characteristics of professionalism in attire, attitude, conversation, behavior and attentiveness to others. Ability to uphold the UCSD Principles of Community, practice the mandatory University Core Values & Safety Standards, and to promote a positive and collaborative team environment.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.

  • Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs such as evenings and weekends.

  • Ability to telecommute for work, if/when needed and operationally feasible, as determined by department.
