The University of California’s only school of international affairs, the School of Global Policy & Strategy (GPS) provides a unique resource for training leaders, creating ideas, and building networks for the governance of globalization and its local impacts. GPS is internationally renowned for its innovative programs, superb faculty and outstanding students, and now stands among the world's top graduate schools of international relations and is the established leader in its focus on Asia and the Americas. GPS instructs a diverse student body consisting of 60% domestic and 40% international students in MPP, MCEPA, MIA, BA-MIA, MAS, joint PhD with Department of Political Science and executive education programs. GPS also administers the International Studies Program, a fast-growing interdisciplinary program with over 1700 declared undergraduate majors, that offers a rigorous curriculum for undergraduate students interested in international affairs. Offering nine B.A. degree options, three combined BA/MIA programs, and a minor program, the International Studies Program explores the interaction between the international and national, global and local, contemporary and historical ideas shaping globalization. GPS is also the parent organization to major research centers: Center for Commerce and Diplomacy (CCD), Center on Global Transformation (CGT), Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies, 21st Century China Center, Fudan-UC Center on China, Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation (IGCC), Policy Design and Evaluation Lab (PDEL), and Japan Forum for Innovation and Technology (JFIT).
Under the general supervision of the GPS Director of Degree Programs, the GPS Student Affairs Advisor coordinates the School’s five-year degree programs from the initial contact with undergraduate students through matriculation to graduate standing. Independently counsels and advises students on the requirements and student eligibility for Admission. Works with the affiliate departments on maintaining students’ files. Takes the lead in organizing and scheduling the GPS’s Summer Prep program for incoming graduate students. Works with the International Studies Program on the organization/presentation of outreach and orientations for incoming students, especially newly admitted transfer and first-generation students. Works with GPS Student Affairs staff on the reconciliation of expenditures for student programs by the Student Affairs staff and GPS student organizations.
Advises students across the GPS and ISP academic programs. Other duties as assigned within scope of description.
- Occasional Overtime may be required including evenings and/weekends, as workload or programming demands.
Bachelor's in counseling, education psychology, and 5 years or more of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience related to academic advising, program planning, implementation, program outreach, and/or assessment efforts.
Knowledge of educational theories and principles and experience in the practical application of academic counseling techniques.
Demonstrated ability to prepare accurate financial reports through knowledge of accounting principles and applications.
Theoretical and practical knowledge in curriculum administration to advise students on University/department program offerings, policies and procedures, and curricular requirements.
Ability to utilize independent decision-making skills. Demonstrated effective problem-solving skills; ability to identify research and analyze complex situations, recommend solutions and determine action steps to be taken to affect resolutions. Excellent leadership skills and ability to work with minimal direction and negotiate conflicts.
Skill in analysis, development, implementation and management of academic and student programs.
Demonstrated ability to work independently or collaboratively in a highly computerized, high volume team-orientated environment, exercising good judgment, creativity and initiative in performance of job responsibilities.
Ability to balance multiple, often conflicting, priorities with deadline constraints and numerous interruptions. Demonstrated ability to successfully follow multiple tasks through to completion.
Able to interact with a wide variety of people at all levels. Excellent interpersonal skills to communicate with provosts, deans, faculty, staff, students and the public in a professional manner with tact, diplomacy and patience.
Excellent communication skills, written and verbal. Ability to write concisely, persuasively, and in summary form. Skill to compose, edit and proofread narrative sections of printed information. Ability to express verbally one’s position, plan of action, evaluation or interpretation in a professional, concise, and courteous manner.
Skill and knowledge to identify, gather, and analyze information (including statistical material) into meaningful reports and/or documents. Ability to analyze complex policies and regulations and exercise sound judgment in their application
Ability to interpret academic material and adapt it for presentation via meetings, advising sessions, print materials (brochures, flyers), and the general catalog.
Strong ability to effectively direct student employees and/or staff including ability to give clear instructions and guidelines, delegation and assignment of tasks, monitoring production and quality of work, setting performance standards, assessing individual capabilities and workloads.
Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
Knowledge of University processes and procedures.
Understanding of University rules and regulations.
