DESCRIPTION

The Infection Preventionist (IP) is an integral team member of UC San Diego Health. This role involves the implementation of healthcare-associated infection reduction strategies for patients and staff through assessment and risk identification, researching current literature and practice, study development and presentation/publication, development, implementation, monitoring and reporting prevention strategies, routine and focused surveillance, policy and procedure development, training and education program development and collaboration with staff in departments across the institution.

The Infection Preventionist applies extensive knowledge of infection control and prevention practices and advanced professional concepts to substantial projects of large scope and high degrees of complexity. Infection Preventionists (IPs) are fully versed in infection control strategies, and work autonomously in the areas of infection control surveillance, consultation, policy development, research and education.

Additionally, IPs may orient and train newly-hired Infection Preventionists, and provide lead direction and work review of other less experienced Infection Preventionists. Practitioners at this level may assume other duties, including chairing committees, assisting with the development of new infection prevention services/training and participating with all levels of the Department of Public Health and Medical Center on emerging issues.

Depending on experience of the selected candidate, this position will be hired at the Infection Prevention Coordinator Level 3 or Level 4.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Seven (7) years related infection control experience OR Bachelor's Degree in health related field and three (3) years of recent infection control experience; and/or equivalent combination of experience/training.

  • Experience and proven success in clinical and operational issues in infection control; including policies, regulatory requirements, surveillance and investigation methodologies, data collection, epidemiology, microbiology, patient care, and related nursing issues.

  • Demonstrated experience with National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) data collection, entry and extraction of NHSN reports.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s Degree in public health or other related health care field.
  • Certification in Infection Prevention and Control (CIC).
  • Five (5+) years or more of recent infection control experience.
  • Experience in a large, complex, academic medical center.
  • Experience with Epic, specifically Epic Icon.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
