Depending on the experience of the selected candidate, this position will be hired at the LAB PROCESSING SUPV 1 or CLIN LAB SUPV 2 level.

DESCRIPTION

The Department and University have supported three faculty members, Drs. Knight, Yeo, and Laurent, in establishing a high-throughput clinical COVID-19 testing laboratory. Employees hired through this posting will serve as General Supervisors for this laboratory.

The incumbent will work in the UCSD Biochemical Genetics Laboratory which is a California Licensed, CLIA and CAP approved Clinical Laboratory. The Biochemical Genetics Lab is an independent reference laboratory that performs clinical tests for pediatric metabolic disorders, as well as clinical testing related to COVID-19.Under general supervision, the incumbent is assigned supervisory and technical responsibility for technologists performing a variety of standard and/or complex clinical assays performed using semi-automated workflows, at a rate of up to 10,000 assays/day.

The incumbent will:
-Write, review, and update policies and procedures (SOP’s) in accordance with State of California, CLIA and CAP guidelines.
-Determine that work is properly completed and reported.
-Maintain and monitor the quality control of procedures in compliance with departmental policies and CLIA/CAP regulatoryrequirements.
-Maintain quality improvement data and statistics.
-Orient new employees, prepare work schedules and work assignments, conduct interviews and counseling, provide performance evaluations of direct reports.
-Keep superiors regularly informed of personnel performance or problems, scheduling problems, difficulties with procedures, equipment, supplies or other daily activities.
-Develop and maintain appropriate inventory of supplies to ensure smooth operation.
-Train direct reports on procedural changes, policy changes and general information.
-Ensure that instrument preventive maintenance, calibration, and trouble-shooting are properly performed.
-Provide input to the Lab Director and the Director of Medical Services on laboratory operation.
-Introduce new procedures or methodologies in-house. Participate in method updates and validation.
-Perform trouble-shooting and minor equipment maintenance.
-Prepare and process specimens for lab testing.
-Perform and evaluate laboratory tests based on nucleic and protein detection and quantification.
-Use, maintain and upgrade laboratory information systems as needed.
-Generate worksheets and reports.

Throughout these tasks, the incumbent will follow guidelines to ensure continued State and CLIA Licensure for the lab. Supervises employees in highly technical sub-specialty area. Directly oversees all the technical operations of the laboratory, enforcing standard operating procedures and research methods. Responsible for laboratorymeeting quality assurance standards.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Nine (9) years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor’s degree in related area plus five (5) years of related experience/training.

  • Possession of current Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) license issued by the California State Department of Health.

  • Maintains current knowledge of laboratory concepts, new methodologies and advances in the field of specimen processing, automation, andprocedures. Ability to apply principles in a clinical laboratory setting.

  • Knowledge of Clinical Laboratory, medical center, HR and UC policies and processes. Thorough knowledge of all relevant sub-specialty area industry, health and safety, federal, and state regulations.

  • Ability to organize assigned staff and laboratory operations in an efficient and effective manner. Highly developed personal organizational skills. Knowledge of quality assurance methods and ability to apply principles to design quality systems.

  • Proven ability to multi-task and reliably manage multiple projects through from inception to completion on schedule in a complex, challenging environment. Flexibility to adjust to constantly changing priorities.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to explain technical clinical specialty concepts, actively listen, persuade, advise, and counsel.

  • Ability to use laboratory’s application programs. Skills to perform data checks using queries, visual review and other appropriate means to verify data accuracy.

  • Skills to evaluate issues and identify solutions within defined procedures and policies. Demonstrated ability to solve problems and suggest solutions through critical thinking process.

  • Interpersonal skills to independently convey information with authority, handle highly sensitive matters and interact with high level contacts from other organizations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • One (1 - 2) to two years of work experience as a California licensed Clinical Laboratory Scientist.
