The Neonatal Advanced Life Support (ALS) Nurse provides care for the high-risk neonate from the time of delivery through discharge from the NICU. The neonatal ALS nurse functions from the time of birth of the high risk infant through their discharge: practices in collaboration with and under the direct supervision of an attending neonatologist; participates in and plans and presents in-service education to learners in the community and the medical center; participates in writing and implementing policies and procedures regarding the care of the high risk neonate; and participates in and may initiate research studies. Under the supervision of a neonatal physician, they each manage the resuscitation of newborn infants, attend deliveries and support the medical management of critically ill neonates.

They act as a liaison and in collaboration with other medical center departments, community agencies, and consultants. Other duties include supporting and assisting with the development of guidelines and employee and student orientation packets. They teach courses on various subjects regarding neonatal care to learners in the NICU. They also participate as the lead care provider on external transports for critical newborns to the medical center and lead resuscitation in high-risk deliveries.

The hiring department is willing to consider candidates who are interested in either part-time or full-time hours.

  • Must be a graduate from an accredited school of nursing.

  • Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by the State of California.

  • BLS/CPR and ACLS certifications at time of hire with commitment to get ART within six months of hire date.

  • NRP certification.

  • Minimum two (2) years recent Neonatal ALS and/or Neonatal Transport RN experience.

  • Attendance/stabilization at high-risk deliveries.

  • Proven knowledge and skill to perform core nursing techniques (i.e. taking of vital signs, collecting lab specimens, administering medications, inserting intravenous lines, initiating and monitoring IV’s, setting up sterile trays, and assisting in procedures).

  • Skill in interpreting lab tests results commonly used in the clinic area.

  • Skill to keep organized and concise records.

  • Demonstrated strong telephone and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with all requirements in use of computer systems and access to any and all patient, student, employee and University data, in electronic and hard copy formats, in compliance with the University, State and Federal guidelines, including, but not limited to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

  • Ability to communicate clearly and accurately both verbally and in writing. Excellent interpersonal skills, using tact and diplomacy in order to interact effectively with all levels of professional staff and a diversity of patients and a professional telephone manner

  • Ability to work under pressure, calmly and efficiently, coping with variable work loads, intermittent delays and emotionally charged situations. Skill to make independent decisions based on sound nursing theory and practice.

  • Ability to adhere to and practice the mandatory University Core Values & Safety Standards of performance, demonstrate at all times the characteristics of professionalism in attire, attitude, conversation, behavior and attentiveness to others; ability to uphold the UCSD Principles of Community and promote a positive and collaborative team environment.

  • Knowledge of assessing and implementing care for patients with medical instabilities such as abnormal labs, abnormal vital signs or signs and symptoms of infection.

  • Knowledge and skill to perform extended skills including managing a neonatal transport, inserting umbilical lines, placing chest tube, intubation and mechanical ventilation management and leading an infant resuscitation.

  • Must be able to work various hours, days, shifts, on-call and locations based on the 24-hour Medical Center's business needs.
  • Ability to travel and work at sites in Hillcrest and La Jolla.

  • Selected candidate may be hired at the CNIII level pending review and approval by the Nurse Executive Council.
