The Program Director will play a key role in the design, organization, management and implementation of the Physician Assistant curriculum leading to the M.A.S. degree. Ultimately, reporting directly to the Vice Dean for Medical Education, the Program Director will provide academic and administrative leadership to the Physician Assistant Program in keeping with established accreditation regulations and guidelines, and the goals and objectives of academic excellence in the School of Medicine. As the Founding Director, the incumbent will also identify, develop and lead the initiatives for curriculum development, student and faculty recruitment, admissions policies and procedure; and ensure the integrity of the academic and operational structures consistent with the UCSD School of Medicine’s commitment to the delivery of superior medical education.

In keeping with the School of Medicine's deep commitment to interprofessional education, this position will work closely with the faculty leadership of the School of Medicine to develop schoolwide policies and practices.
The Program Director will have oversight responsibility of all functions, operations and staff of the Physician Assistant Program, including:
· Providing leadership and oversight for program administration and quality assurance purposes and ensure continued program accreditation.
· Coordinating resources and related requests with the appropriate School of Medicine leadership.
· Working with the medical director, faculty and leadership to enhance the PA program and participate in strategic plans consistent with the overall goals and core attributes of the School of Medicine.
· Participating in student recruitment, admission, orientation and ongoing communications and program advising.
· Leading curriculum development conducted in collaboration with faculty.
· Providing oversight for student matriculation and program completion in collaboration with education team.
· Supporting faculty efforts to provide outstanding interprofessional academic learning experiences for students.
· Collaborating with faculty and education team to monitor ongoing student progression and facilitate student success.
· Serving as the first point of contact with clinical agencies, including recruiting new sites, maintaining relationships, and ensuring sites are appropriate for meeting program objectives.
· Providing oversight for clinical education activities, ensuring that the coordinator:
- Creates and maintains efficient systems, policies, and procedures with high quality outcomes for clinical placements.
- Ensures placements meet requirements for state and national regulations.
- Ensures ARC-PA requirements for clinical hours are met.
The Program Director will participate on the following School of Medicine committees:
· Committee on Educational Policy, CEP (ex-officio/facilitator)
· Core Curriculum Committee, a subcommittee of CEP (ex-officio facilitator)
CT - Responsible for developing professional health education programs and providing quality educational experiences for learners. As a recognized expert, leads the most complex strategizing and planning that has critical impact throughout the organization. Leads continuous program improvement efforts to increased educational quality and operational efficiency.
Graduate degree (MA, MS, PhD) in related area
Masters degree in Physician Assistant Education
Must hold current or emeritus NCCPA certification status
Must be eligible for PA license in the State of California
Seven (7+) or more years of relevant experience.
Three (3) years experience in educating PA students.
Expert knowledge of internal and external policies and regulatory requirements. Expert knowledge of a health professions education program curriculum and requirements. Maintains a deep expertise in health professions education theory and industry best practices. Knowledge of the Accreditation Standards for Physician Assistant Education.
Expert knowledge of administrative analysis and operations research. Demonstrated ability to apply knowledge and skills to develop and implement processes and systems to highly complex, unprecedented situations in administration and operations.
Excellent communicator; great critical thinking and advising skills. Persuasive ability to change the thinking of, or gain acceptance from leadership.
Highly developed interpersonal skills. Strong diplomacy skills and ability to develop strong working relationships with department, Management, industry leaders and external agencies. Proven ability to advise and influence all levels of leadership and staff.
Highly developed skills and expertise in organizational and project management. Leads teams and directs projects through from inception to completion on schedule. Excellent personal organization skills.
Expert knowledge of current and emerging educational technologies to enhance teaching and learning practices. Expert ability to facilitate educational technology opportunities using technology-based solutions.
Advanced knowledge of data management, documentation methods used in investigating and presenting findings about the program.
Strong, demonstrated ability to understand, analyze, and interpret academic records and other complex data and effectively communicate results of analysis to a diverse community.
Proven ability to provide effective leadership to a team of professional staff in a multi-functional, dynamic, fast-paced and ever-changing environment. Supervisory experience, with the ability to promote team building and best management practices.
Broad knowledge of trends in Physician Assistant employment. Expert knowledge of the role of Physicians Assistant in collaborative medical teams.
- Five (5) years of clinical experience as a Physician Assistant is preferred.
- Employment is subject to a criminal background check.
- Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.
