The implementation of evidence-based practice into real-world human service settings is an important priority for improving the quality of services and outcomes for individuals and families. Identifying the factors that facilitate successful service implementation and the attainment of desired outcomes requires investigation into the characteristics of and inter-relationships between service delivery strategies, service recipients, service providers, and the organizations and systems within which they are embedded.
The evidence-based research study investigates what it takes to effectively implement and sustain clinical practices in community-based settings. Multiple ongoing research studies utilize quantitative and qualitative methods to develop detailed service assessments and improvement recommendations for substance use disorder (SUD) treatment, mental health care, and social service sectors. Our studies aim to identify and support the organizational factors that improve evidence-based practice implementation and sustainability, including organizational culture, organizational climate, and leadership. Data sources include large administrative data sets as well as original data collected from mental health, substance use, and social service agencies. Study participants include program executives, supervisors, direct service providers, and their clients.
Under direct supervision of the Principal Investigator, the incumbent will function as a Leadership Research Trainer for the Child & Adolescent Services Research Center (CASRC) in the Department of Psychiatry at UC San Diego. The incumbent will primarily work with the research team in expanding the ‘Leadership and Organizational Change for Implementation’ (LOCI) intervention to include partnership with the Oregon Health Authority (OHA), Alcohol and Drug Policy Commission, Coordinated Care Organizations (CCOs), and SUD provider organizations in Oregon to improve the use of evidence-based SUD treatment, specifically Motivational Interviewing (MI).
The LOCI strategy was developed to support the behavioral health workforce in implementing and sustaining evidence-based care. LOCI has shown to be effective for promoting implementation efforts in a variety of national and international service settings, for a variety of evidence-based practices. Our current NIH-funded project is focused on workforce leadership development to support implementation of technological innovation supporting the use of MI in SUD and integrated SUD/mental health treatment settings. This work also aims to align to these activities with state level policy and quality metrics related to SUD treatment.
Although activities are conducted with agencies in Oregon State, this position is based in San Diego.
Six (6) years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor’s degree in related area plus two (2) years of related experience/training or advanced degree in Psychology, Public Health, or related field.
Good skills in delivering training programs. Demonstrated knowledge of and experience facilitating group discussions.
Familiar with current training programs and trends. Working knowledge of conducting needs assessment.
Working knowledge of delivering training programs and of other areas of human resources. Proven knowledge of and experience providing mentorship, coaching, and/or consultation with individuals and/or groups.
Research experience involving human subjects, including data collection, data analysis, data management, and data presentation.
Good verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills and good presentation skills. Demonstrated ability to communicate research results effectively in writing and in person.
Theoretical and applied knowledge of evidence-based practices in substance use treatment, mental health care, and/or social service sectors.
Demonstrated ability to use tact, diplomacy, and confidentiality in related to project stakeholders, including research participants, community partners, and system leaders.
Experience using multiple statistical programs, such as SPSS, Mplus, Excel and/or other software packages for quantitative data management and analysis.
Proficiency with a variety of computer programs including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher and Web-Survey software (such as Qualtrics).
Background working with a variety of individuals including community stakeholders, program executives, supervisors, service providers, administrative staff, and other research staff.
Good analytical skills to understand how business needs can be addressed through the design and delivery of training programs.
- Master's level training or equivalent in Psychology, Industrial/Organizational Psychology, Public Health, Health Services Research, and/or Program Evaluation.
- Knowledge in leadership models, leadership development, and organizational change.
- Mixed-methods experience and knowledge of qualitative analysis software (e.g., NVivo).
- Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
- Must be willing to work a flexible schedule, including occasional overtime.
- Annual TB test, flu vaccination and background check required to be in accordance with Rady Children’s Hospital health requirements.
- Must have access to reliable transportation and be willing to travel occasionally to various research study sites.
