DESCRIPTION

Under supervision, the incumbent will work as a Laboratory Assistant for psychophysiological and neuropsychological research projects. Specific duties will include: scheduling and screening of human research subjects; data collection and maintenance; assist in conducting psychophysiological and neuropsychological tests on healthy control subjects and subjects with psychiatric diagnoses, measuring heart rate and blood pressure; assisting with testing urine from subjects for toxicology analysis; maintaining equipment and supplies; and keeping adequate copies of written material needed for testing. Incumbent will be required to perform other general laboratory and administrative support as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Two (2) years of laboratory experience or two (2) years of college including courses in Psychology, Biology, Behavioral Neuroscience or a related field and one (1) year of laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • A valid California Driver's license and vehicle and willingness to drive to different locations in San Diego County.

  • Previous experience working in a research setting involving human subjects, or a clinical setting involving adult patients with mental illness, and knowledge of University Human Research Protection Program guidelines.

  • Good observational skills in order to describe and quantify psychopathology.

  • Excellent and appropriate communication skills in dealing with patients, personnel, staff, faculty, as well as when representing the community.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills to keep accurate, retrievable paper and electronic records, and anticipate (and solve) potential problems. Skill in prioritizing multiple responsibilities and tasks.

  • Strong basic computer skills using PC and Macintosh such as word processing and data entry using Microsoft Word, Excel and statistical programs (e.g. Statview).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience recruiting human subject research participants.
  • Ability to carefully and accurately administer standardized psychiatric rating scales, interviews, and neuropsychological tests such as the MATRICS Comprehensive Cognitive Battery (MCCB) and Structured Clinical Interview for DSM (SCID).
  • Experience using psychophysiological measures, including electromyography (EMG), and electroencephalography (EEG), in the testing of patients with mental illness.
  • Knowledge and experience working with adult patients with mental illness and the ability to use neuropsychological measures and scales designed for studies of psychiatric populations.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
  • Must be able to work overtime or after hours as needed.
  • Must have a valid CA driver's license, acceptable driving record and insurance that meet UCSD requirements.
  • Must have access to reliable transportation for research subject recruitment in multiple sites in San Diego County.
