The Executive Director of Development for the Office of Gift Planning (EDOD-GP) fulfills an important role in UC San Diego's Advancement program. Under the general direction of the Associate Vice Chancellor, Advancement Operations & Campaign (AVC-AOC), and as a member of the AOC senior management team, the EDOD-GP has responsibility for the comprehensive leadership and management of the entire Gift Planning Team, including providing specialized and effective gift planning leadership during all phases of the current and any future upcoming comprehensive campaigns. The EDOD-GP provides strategic planning for the OGP and is responsible for positioning the OGP to be an integral component of annual fundraising success.

The EDOD-GP will be primarily responsible for ensuring the OGP meets a campaign goal in excess of $170,000,000. The EDOD-GP serves as a senior development officer responsible for collaborating with development colleagues across campus to identify, cultivate, solicit, negotiate, and steward principal, major, and gift planning donors and prospects, including, but not limited to proposal preparation, gift analysis, prospect tracking, management and stewardship, and implementing strategic marketing. In addition, the EDOD-GP serves as the primary point of contact for trust and estate transactions, including the management and administration of the trust and estates portfolio provide accurate and effective legal analysis as needed to protect the university’s interests.

The incumbent provides strong leadership, principal gift strategic planning and management to Advancement (University Development, Health Sciences Advancement, Leadership Strategy and Engagement, Marine Sciences, Annual Giving). Prepares written and oral presentations to potential donors and community groups. Develops gift opportunities consistent with Campus priorities in coordination with UC San Diego, UC Office of the President, UC General Counsel’s Office, UCOP Real Estate Office, and UC San Diego Foundation policies and goals.

The EDOD-GP is responsible for instituting and maintaining a service-oriented, collaborative development and marketing operation that is responsive to campus leadership, faculty, development colleagues and staff campus-wide as well as to principal and major gift donors, prospects, and the community. The EDOD-GP maintains a selective portfolio of principal and major gift donors including the active management of the university's trust and estates portfolio. EDOD-GP also provides mentoring, counsel, and effective support and gift structuring analysis and advice for Advancement staff campus wide. The EDOD-GP is the primary UC San Diego contact for gift planning and is expected to cultivate and maintain relationships within the professional advisor community specifically in the critical areas of legal/estate/financial planning, wealth advisory, money managers, family office professionals, and accountants.

  • Expert working knowledge of all aspects of fundraising, donor relations, and public relations concepts, principles, procedures, and techniques.

  • Proven success at raising funds by developing and implementing strategic solicitation fund raising plans that incorporate a concise definition of goals, targeted audiences, and strategies in-line with institutional and academic goals in higher education and closing major gifts ($100,000+) and principal gifts ($1M+) from individuals.

  • Experience working with executors, attorneys, development officers, university administrators, and faculty to coordinate the administration of trusts and estates, including the appropriate flow of information, participation in assessments of estates, and final acceptance of estate and trust gifts.

  • Expert written and interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen, to establish and maintain good working relationships throughout the organization and with outside constituencies. Expert skills in making persuasive and compelling presentations of goals and objectives for a location in order to secure gifts.

  • Strong organizational, analytical and critical thinking skills. Expert project/program management skills, including skills in setting and meeting program/project goals and objectives within budget and time constraints.

  • Demonstrated understanding of fundraising and the concepts of development and advancement for an academic institution, with emphasis on planned giving.

  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and comprehension skills to gather data, fully analyze assignments, and present alternative solutions within a deadline framework.

  • Proven understanding of the importance of ensuring an equitable, inclusive, and diverse working environment, with the ability to work as a part of a diverse and collaborative team. Demonstrated competency and commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.

  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills, including tact, diplomacy, and flexibility to interact with both campus personnel as well as members of the external community.

  • Experience supervising staff, including recruiting, interviewing, hiring, training and mentoring. Experience conducting performance reviews, and counseling and disciplining staff. Ability to provide professional growth advice and opportunities for staff.

  • Thorough understanding of the philosophy of quality service, and group process, with proven aptitude to work as a part of a team, to accept direction in a collegial manner and commitment to equal opportunity awareness of diversity in the workplace.

  • Proficient expertise with PC, specifically spreadsheet programs and database systems.
