This is a 100% limited appointment for twelve (12) months with the possibility of extension or conversion to career status, depending on project needs and funding availability.


The Staff Research Associate will assist the Principal Investigator (PI) in conducting scientific research using mammalian cells and yeast strains. Yeast work will include standard yeast strain manipulation, including yeast transformation of DNA and selection on the appropriate yeast cell plates, and preparing yeast cell extracts. In addition, the incumbent will grow established mammalian cell lines and primary mouse cells to generate protein extracts or nucleic acid (both DNA and RNA) samples. Furthermore, the incumbent will generate frozen cell lines and yeast strain stocks. Mammalian cell work will also include standard tissue culture cell maintenance, transfection of plasmid DNA, and selection and cloning of the appropriate transformants on the selectable media.

Under supervision, the incumbent will perform research using a wide variety of standard repetitive procedures, maintain and archive new strains, cell lines, and generate their mutants, optimize assays, and assist with data analysis. Additionally, the incumbent will oversee general laboratory maintenance, hire and oversee student workers, and train lab personnel.

  • Must be flexible with work hours and be willing and able to work occasional overtime during evenings or weekends as required by particular experiments.


  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of biology, molecular biology or biochemistry acquired through a BS Degree or higher in Biology or related field; OR an equivalent combination of education and laboratory experience.

  • Thorough knowledge of specialized scientific terminology and ability to perform research under guidance.

  • Demonstrated experience working with antibodies and yeast.

  • Experience working with molecular biology procedures such as DNA and RNA cloning, gel electrophoresis, Western blotting, etc.

  • Proven knowledge and skill working with sterile equipment and supplies. Exerience with the operation of laboratory equipment, including centrifuges, ultracentrifuges, balances, and pH meters.

  • Proven experience using fluorescent microscope (deconvolution and confocal).

  • Demonstrated skill with stoichiometric calculations, i.e. molarity, etc.

  • Thorough knowledge of purchasing and reimbursement procedures. Skill in maintaining purchasing records, steady levels of lab supplies, and training others in purchasing procedures.

  • Proven knowledge of PubMed or library literature search to identify relevant research papers, journals and books.

  • Proficient knowledge and experience in using MAC and associated software, including FilemakerPro, MS Word, and Excel.

  • Ability to record scientific data in a well-organized laboratory notebook. Strong organizational skills to keep clear and accurate records.

  • Knowledge of Material Data Safety Sheets, and hazardous communication and Injury and Illness Prevention programs. Proven knowledge of laboratory safety precautions, including use of protective items such as goggles, coats, etc., and the ability to train other laboratory members in safety precautions.

  • Experience and knowledge of proper handling, storage and disposal of chemicals, radioisotopes, biochemicals, hazardous chemicals, and biohazardous materials, including radioactive materials.

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills. Ability using tact, diplomacy, discretion, and flexibility with diverse personalities. Ability to work as part of research team and interact effectively with collaborating labs and others in scientific community. Ability to maintain confidentiality of matters related to work.

  • Ability to embrace and consistently uphold the UC San Diego Principles of Community for a collaborative work environment.


  • Experience with CRISPR/Cas9 technology.

  • Some experience working with iPSC cells, including generation and differentiation of iPSC cells.

  • Some experience in RNA expression analysis using RNAseq and its data analysis.


  • Must be willing to work with radioisotopes (35S, 32P).
