DESCRIPTION

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:

The Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department embodies the university's tradition of excellence as a world-class leader in computer science and engineering education and research. Ranked in the top 20 nationwide, the department is dedicated to research, education and overall excellence.

CSE has approximately 75+ faculty FTE, 20+ professional researchers, 50+ staff in career/casual titles, 300+ tutors, and 175+ TAs. There are over 1,900 undergraduate students enrolled in 3 majors, with annual enrollments of 25,000+. The department has a graduate education program with over 1,000 students (~350 PhD students and over 900 Master's students).

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Uses professional engineering concepts. Develops and proposes engineering plans and specifications for equipment and instruments with limited scope and complexity. Follows standard practices and procedures in analyzing situations or data from which answers can be readily obtained.

The Research and Development Engineer will take on a vital role in advancing the research initiatives by assisting the PI’s with projects, with a focus on hardware experiments on robotics platforms and leveraging learning-based methodologies for their optimization and control. The incumbent will actively provide support by participating in the ongoing research activities such as DOE and NSF projects. This participation will not only include engaging with and contributing to the core research topics but also collaborating with other researchers and stakeholders involved in the institute.

The Research and Development Engineer will assist in a range of experimental projects in robotics hardware. This will involve providing support in designing and refining algorithms that integrate learning-based approaches into the control and optimization of robotic systems, ensuring these algorithms are both effective and efficient. The incumbent will also be responsible for the hands-on setup, testing, and troubleshooting of robotic hardware, as well as the documentation and analysis of experimental results. The incumbent assist in disseminating the findings of the research. This will include assisting writing detailed papers for publication in respected academic journals and presenting findings at industry conferences, seminars, and other relevant forums. Additionally, the incumbent will assist in preparing and delivering comprehensive reports on project progress and outcomes, highlighting both the theoretical advancements and practical implementations.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent experience/training.

  • Basic knowledge of engineering principles and methods to perform entry-level professional engineering functions.

  • Knowledge of the fundamental concepts of the field.

  • Basic knowledge of computer programming principles and programming languages.

  • Experience with robotics hardware and systems.

  • Analytical skills, and strong skills in attention to detail.

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.

  • Analytical and judgment skills to conduct analyses and develop appropriate recommendations.

  • Ability to work in a collaborative manner.

  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills to interact with diverse individuals and groups.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.

  • Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.

  • Overtime may be required.

  • This is a 50% part-time Contract position for 1 year with the possibility of extension or conversion to career status, based on the needs of the department.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $63,800 - $111,600 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $30.56 - $53.45

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
